# Hint

An inline, dotted-underline span with a small info icon, for a short aside — hover (or focus, via keyboard) to reveal a one-line tooltip, without breaking up the surrounding sentence the way a `Callout` would:

The `timeout` field is measured in <Hint tip="1000ms = 1 second">milliseconds</Hint>, not seconds.

```mdx
The `timeout` field is measured in <Hint tip="1000ms = 1 second">milliseconds</Hint>, not seconds.
```

Unlike every other built-in in this section, `Hint` is inline, not block-level — it's meant to sit mid-sentence, not on its own line.

**`Hint` props**

<Parameter name="tip" type="string" required>
  The tooltip's text — plain text only.
</Parameter>

<Parameter name="headline" type="string">
  A bold line above `tip`.
</Parameter>

<Parameter name="cta" type="string">

</Parameter>

<Parameter name="href" type="string">
  Where `cta` links to.
</Parameter>

<Parameter name="icon" type="boolean" default="true">
  The small info icon after the text. `icon={false}` leaves just the dotted underline: <Hint tip="No icon on this one" icon={false}>like this</Hint>.
</Parameter>

Hover <Hint headline="Rate limit" tip="Requests allowed per minute, per API key." cta="See the limits" href="/docs/quickstart/">this term</Hint> for a tooltip with a headline and a link.

`<Tooltip>` is the same component under Mintlify's name, with the same props.
